Saarstahl makes 85 places available for training, retraining and apprenticeship

Starting on 16th August 1999, 66 trainees will be taken on by Saarstahl AG. In addition, there will be 3 trainees for subsidiaries and 3 trainee places within the framework of a combine.

Furthermore, 2 retrainees, 3 trainees from technical college doing business studies and 8 technical college trainees from the field of technology and commerce will be taken on.

Besides the classic, technical apprenticeships such as:

. industrial mechanic/operating technology,
. lathe operator/lathe turning, milling and grinding technology,
. constructional mechanic,
. electronics installer/operating technology,
. material tester and
. chemical laboratory technician, trainees will also be taken on for commercial and other occupations such as.

. office communications secretary
. industrial clerk/clerkess
. catering and hotel manageress

The trainees will be distributed throughout the individual sites as follows:
.Völklingen and Burbach 66
. Neunkirchen 16
. Subsidiaries  3

Saarstahl AG has therefore taken on a total of 361 trainees since 1993. Of these, 273 have already been taken over into full employment.

As one of the largest companies offering training in the Saarland, Saarstahl AG intends to continue to provide a large number of training places.

The Saarstahl ship loading and unloading terminal
in Völklingen goes into operation

On 30.07.1999, the new Saarstahl ship loading and unloading terminal in Völklingen, in direct proximity to Saarstahl AG's BOF plant started operation with the unloading of the first ship. With this borth, the spectrum of possibilties for the supply of raw materials and the forwarding of semi-finished products and finished products by ship is being considerably broadened.

The Metallurgische Gesellschaft Saar GmbH (MGS), a subsidiary of Saarstahl AG operates the loading and unloading terminal. MGS has operations in Völklingen and Dillingen in the fields of steel recycling, breaking, dismantling, scrapping and crushing of scrap including the marketing side of this and can now look back on a tradition of almost 80 years. As one of the first companies in the Saarland, MGS has also been successfully certified as a specialist disposal company since 1997.The investment involved in the loading and unloading terminal, i.e. quay, bracing and access routes, amounts to 3.5 Mill. DM. Including the loading crane, the total investment amounts to approx. 4,6 Mill. DM.

Saar-Bandstahl GmbH has been certified

Saar-Bandstahl GmbH, Völklingen, a 100 % subsidiary of SAARSTAHL AG, is an approved international manufacturer of cold -rolled steel strips.

To add to the certification for their Quality Management system according to DIN EN ISO 9002, Saar-Bandstahl GmbH was given a further certificate by the TÜV CERT certification body on 08.03.1999. This certifies that the Quality Management System of Saar-Bandstahl GmbH fulfils the requirements of QS 9000 (3. Ed.).

This certification is a further successful step towards continual improvement in the performance at Saar-Bandstahl GmbH. It guarantees that the customer's great demands regarding product quality, adherence to schedules and value for money are fulfilled. In this way, the Quality Management system reinforces the company's competitiveness.

Assessment of our Year 2000 Project by TÜV

Due to the importance of our company as a supplier to the automotive industry, the Year 2000 Project at Saarstahl AG was audited by TÜV Rheinland.

The audit took place on 16.03.1999 and we received the best possible partial result for this audit and therefore the best possible result overall.

This means. in particular:

All affected products, systems and interfaces were evaluated by the project group regarding the amount of work required and the deadline. The security of the main company processes is no longer at risk. Any remaining activities still to be carried out have been scheduled and can no longer have any negative effect on the success of the change-over.
