Besides controlling all processes with relevance to the environment in each of the individual area, the Department for Environmental Protection advises the responsible managers in the plant in questions regarding the environment. The emphasis of the department's work is on fulfilling the following tasks : • Processing approval applications for the four specialized areas with corresponding discussions with the   authorities • Fulfilling the role prescribed by law for an environmental representative • Setting up and maintaining an Environmental Management System • Giving advice when new facilities are installed or conversion work takes place • Operating a waste collection area • Controlling internal and external measurements • Controlling analyses of waste and waste water • Controlling recycling and disposal processes • Setting up and maintaining the facility valuation list for water-endangering substances which is required by law • Employee training courses • Participation in external committees (VDEH, IHK and others) for assessing new environmental laws and   regulations.
