Saarstahl is building a new continuous casting plant – Investment of 100 million euros in the steelmaking plant at the Völklingen site

In a meeting which took place today, the Supervisory Board of Saarstahl AG agreed to invest an amount of 100 million euros in a new continuous casting plant. The company operates a total of four continuous casting plants in the steelmaking plant. Here, hot liquid metal is cast into so-called billets. This primary material is then further processed in the rolling mills. The new five-strand plant with the short name S1 will replace an existing plant. The construction work will start in spring 2018 and commissioning of the plant is planned for the end of 2019.

A group of 139 young people started their working lives today with Saarstahl AG and AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger). The group includes 15 women and 17 participants in the intercultural BEST 2.0 career-entry program.⃰

Energy efficiency with steel: Verband der Saarhütten and Saarland’s steel industry launch the ESTA energy efficiency network

“500 new energy efficiency networks by 2020” – that was the goal set by Germany’s federal government in December 2014 in an agreement with industry and trade associations including the Federation of German Steel Industry (Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl). With the founding of the ESTA (Energieeffizienz mit STAhl) energy efficiency network on 1 June 2017, Saarland’s steel industry is actively supporting this government initiative. The goal is to further strengthen the already numerous activities aimed at reducing energy use.

SHS Ventures, a venture capital company of SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar and VSE, has acquired shares in Zensor, a Belgian service provider based in Brussels. Zensor has developed an integrated solution that provides predictive maintenance for large, stationary parts of technical plants and infrastructure.

On behalf of Saarland’s steel industry, SHS Ventures, a venture capital company, has acquired a stake in Mapudo GmbH, an independent trading platform for steel traders based in Düsseldorf. The investment in the single digit million range has taken place along with two other investors, the NRW.Bank and HR Ventures, in order to finance Mapudo’s growth.

The steel foundation of the Saarland “Stahlstiftung Saarland” is enabling young people to take part in an educational programme to prepare them for their career start. For the first time, refugees and young Germans are participating in a project together. The training locations are the training facilities of AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger) and Saarstahl AG.
