SHS - Stahl Holding Saar acquired Dillinger Hafen-Umschlagsgesellschaft mbH from HES International
Dillingen/Rotterdam. SHS – Stahl Holding Saar GmbH & Co.KG (SHS) acquired Dillinger Hafen-Umschlagsgesellschaft mbH (DHUG) from HES International on 18 September 2023. The declared aim of the purchase is to further optimize the SHS supply chains. Following a strategic review, HES International decided that DHUG is better positioned to fit into the portfolio of SHS.

The historic Saarstahl plant in Neunkirchen recently celebrated its 430th anniversary. The plant is an important employer for the region with a current workforce of about 800 people. Employees of the plant – some of whom are from families that have worked in Saarland’s steel industry for generations – see themselves as part of the big steelmaking family. They showed their affiliation with the plant during the celebration by responding to the invitation in large numbers, together with their families.

For the second time in a row, the corporate social responsibility management at Saarstahl has been awarded the highest possible platinum medal by EcoVadis. This means that the Saarland-based steel producer is once again among the top one percent of companies rated in the sector. EcoVadis is an internationally recognized sustainability ratings platform. The rating, for which the evaluation criteria were increased in the current period, confirms the consistently high quality of Saarstahl’s sustainability management.

• Iberdrola Germany and SHS – Stahl Holding Saar GmbH & Co. KGaA conclude a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) for 15 years. • With a capacity of about 50 MW from the Baltic Eagle offshore wind farm, SHS is covering annual consumption of 200 GWh. • The green electricity will be used in future production of low-carbon steel in Saarland’s steel industry. • Additional opportunities for cooperation in the areas of onshore, hydrogen and “circularity” (offshore wind) are being studied.

The earthquake disaster in the border region of Turkey and Syria as well as the impact on the people there are enormous and require targeted aid. The SHS Group wants to do its part to help the affected people and alleviate the need. The steel companies are therefore supporting the German Red Cross (Deutsches Rotes Kreuz, DRK) and AWO International with an immediate donation of EUR 50,000 to each organization for their relief efforts.

During the international trade fair Hyvolution, the Grande Region Hydrogen EEIG (GRH) association with partners from Saarland, Grand Est and Luxembourg presented its goal of building a cross-border hydrogen economy today in Paris. Sustainably well positioned: CDP leadership status for the SHS Group

ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar mbH and Zentralkokerei Saar GmbH (ZKS), both joint subsidiaries of DILLINGER and Saarstahl, have selected two more business partners in addition to Canada’s IOC Iron Ore Company for Top Supplier honors in 2021: the Dutch transhipment port OVET in the “Seafreight and Transshipment” category, and the mining group BHP Billiton in the “Solid fuels” category.

Saarstahl supports Völklingen Tafel food bank – St. Nicholas project and clothes for volunteers
EUR 7,500 for Völklingen Tafel food bank
Saarstahl AG regularly supports the Völklingen Tafel food bank and is now donating EUR 7,500. The Diakonie Saar, which sponsors the Tafel food bank, used part of the donation to purchase the softshell vests and aprons for the more than 30 volunteers and packed St. Nicholas bags for the customers. The remaining sum will be used for maintaining the food bank and for non-perishable foodstuffs, which are donated by supermarkets only in small quantities because they now calculate their stocks more accurately in this respect.

Historic investment for greater climate protection: Supervisory Boards approve investment of EUR 3.5 billion for green steel from Saarland.
The Supervisory Boards of SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar, Saarstahl AG and Aktien-Gesellschaft der Dillinger Hüttenwerke (Dillinger), the Board of Trustees of Montan-Stiftung-Saar, and the Board of Management of SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar have jointly resolved to invest EUR 3.5 billion – subject to the approval of public funds – to transform the steel industry in the Saarland and enable production of green steel. The decision by the Supervisory Boards enables the decarbonization of Saarland’s steel industry. Starting as early as 2027, up to 3.5 million tons of low-carbon steel will be produced annually in Saarland and carbon emissions will be cut by 4.9 million tons.

IOC Iron Ore Company of Canada receives award as „TOP supplier“ again
ROGESA Roheisengesellschaft Saar mbH and Zentralkokerei Saar GmbH (ZKS) introduced a supplier management system as part of their substainability strategy in 2019. Since then, top suppliers have been awarded based on defined sustainability and quality criteria, they have to fullfill conditions such as: product quality, adherence to quantities and deadlines, flexibility with regard to changing framework conditions, technical support granded and sustainability. For the iron ore sector, ROEGSA and Zentralkokerei recently awarded the IOC Iron Ore Company of Canada as TOP supplier of the year 2021. So, the canadian company has received the TOP supplier award twice in the row.

Industrial specialist for hydrogen – that’s the name of a new vocational qualification that will be in demand in the future at SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar with the companies Dillinger and Saarstahl. The world of work and fields of activity will change fundamentally for employees when the largest employer in Saarland converts its traditional blast furnace route to more sustainable technologies. The Saarland Chamber of Industry and Commerce (IHK) and SHS – Stahl-Holding-Saar are supporting this transformation in the world of work by offering custom-tailored qualification programs. The first low-carbon steel is slated to be produced in Saarland in 2027. Qualification training is beginning in parallel with the planning of the plants.

The celebration could finally take place in April: Dillinger and Saarstahl once again held their big anniversary ceremony following a two-year pause due to COVID-19. With the Executive Board, Board of Trustees and Works Council members in attendance, 1,468 anniversary honorees were recognized for 50, 45, 35 and 25 years of loyalty to the company. Because the anniversary period this time included September 2019 to April 2022, not only the number of anniversaries but also their years of service with the company was record-breaking: The honorees have committed a combined sum of 47,515 years to Saarstahl and Dillinger!

Achieving the turnaround: Dillinger and Saarstahl significantly improve operating profit
• The Saarstahl and Dillinger Groups can look back on a successful 2021 financial year. • Net sales increased significantly: in the Dillinger Group from €1.645 billion to €2.281 billion and in the Saarstahl Group from €1.684 billion to €2.777 billion. • Dillinger Group closed the financial year with an EBITDA of €201.1 million and an EBIT of €80.1 million. The Saarstahl Group recorded an EBITDA of €281.5 million and an EBIT of €187.9 million. • The cost-cutting program initiated in 2019 has been implemented quickly and effectively. The final measures will be completed in 2022.

The French plants Saarstahl Ascoval and Saarstahl Rail are playing an important strategic role within the SHS/Saarstahl Group with the production of low-carbon steel and high-quality infrastructure products for the mobility revolution. Saarstahl subsidiary Schweißdraht Luisenthal (SDL) has commissioned a new copper plating plant. A total of around EUR 5 million has been invested in the plant. The plant has two state-of-the-art copper-plating lines and, together with the previously existing plant that likewise features a two-wire line, will double the production capacity of the welding wire specialist while also further improving quality.

Dillinger and Saarstahl were honored with Saarland’s Family-Friendly Company seal of quality from saar.is. Ute Knerr, project manager of the Working and Living in Saarland service center (saar.is), presented the certificate to Joerg Disteldorf, Chief Human Resources Officer and Labor Director at Dillinger and Saarstahl. State Secretary for Economic Affairs Jürgen Barke also accepted the invitation and congratulated the steel partners on receiving the award. Saarstahl was certified for the first time and Dillinger was recertified.

On 6 December – St. Nicholas Day in Germany – the Tafel food bank in Völklingen is receiving a EUR 5,000 donation from Saarstahl AG. The volunteers used part of the money to pack St. Nicholas bags for the children of the roughly 300 families who currently visit the food bank. The remaining EUR 4,500 will be used to finance the new refrigerated vehicle that is urgently needed by the food bank, which is run by Diakonie Saar.

First low-carbon steel from Saarstahl Ascoval arrives in Saarland
From the outside the steel ingots – known in the industry as steel billets – look like ordinary steel. But the delivery of these billets is a special first: the first delivery of low-carbon steel from Saarstahl Ascoval, the new Saarstahl subsidiary in the north of France (Saint-Saulve), has arrived at the Burbach works. There they are rolled into wire and delivered to the first customers in the construction industry.

Stability for the future – 20 years of Montan-Stiftung-Saar
The Montan-Stiftung-Saar foundation was established on 7 September 2001 as part of the “Saarland iron and steelworks solution”. The aim of the foundation was to reorganize the ownership structure of the steel industry in Saarland in order to secure the long-term sustainability of the companies and jobs in the industry. The foundation has been a guarantor for the stability of the Saarland steel industry since 2001. In line with the purpose of the foundation, it has also become an integral part of the Saarland university landscape as a supporter of education and science.

The SHS/Saarstahl Group today announced the new names for the two plants in France to employees and customers of the Hayange rail plant and the Saint-Saulve steelmaking plant based on the electric arc furnace (EAF) technology. Saarstahl’s sustainability efforts again earn gold in 2021
The strong and long-standing commitment of Saarstahl to corporate social responsibility (CSR) was again rated worthy of a gold medal in 2021 by EcoVadis, an international provider of sustainability ratings. Saarstahl had already been honored with a gold rating in 2020. This year the company scored 72 points, placing the Saarland steel company among the top three percent of companies in its industry category. The CSR rating by EcoVadis confirms that responsible action and sustainable management are central components of Saarstahl's corporate policy.

The environmental project represents an investment of EUR 28 million.

Saarstahl AG invests 17 million euros in the Homburg site of its Saar-Blankstahl subsidiary
A pioneering construction site at the Saarstahl subsidiary in Homburg: work is now underway to expand the heat treatment capacity at Saar-Blankstahl. With the decision taken by the Supervisory Board at the end of 2018 to expand the annealing capacity of its subsidiary, Saarstahl AG is responding to an expected increase in worldwide demand for heat-treated bar material and to demand for higher-quality steels, which also play an important role in electric mobility. The company is investing 17 million euros in this project.

The Saarstahl Group looks back on a successful business year 2018 which is characterized by a further increase in sales revenues and favourable figures in the financial result. Mr Hartmann will also take on responsibility for Finance. Saarstahl is building a new continuous casting plant – Investment of 100 million euros in the steelmaking plant at the Völklingen site
In a meeting which took place today, the Supervisory Board of Saarstahl AG agreed to invest an amount of 100 million euros in a new continuous casting plant. The company operates a total of four continuous casting plants in the steelmaking plant. Here, hot liquid metal is cast into so-called billets. This primary material is then further processed in the rolling mills. The new five-strand plant with the short name S1 will replace an existing plant. The construction work will start in spring 2018 and commissioning of the plant is planned for the end of 2019.

Meet Saarstahl at the „WIRE” 2014
From 7 to 11 April the trade fair “WIRE” takes place at the Düsseldorf exhibition centre. Under the slogan “Join the best” no less than the future of the wire and cable industry is being presented. Around 1,313 exhibitors from all over the world await 38,000 international trade visitors and decision makers. Saarstahl also participates in the world leading platform for the wire and cable industry and is looking forward to meeting its customers and business partners in Hall 12 at Stand B76.

Saarstahl gewinnt Michelin Supplier Award 2013
Saarstahl AG has received this year's “Michelin Supplier Award”. Since 2010, the global player Michelin SCA has been presenting this award in recognition of those partners who provide special support in achieving Michelin´s high quality targets and who fufill the demanding Michelin standards. Martin Baues, Chief Technical Officer at Saarstahl, to whom the award was presented on 25th September 2013 in Clermont-Ferrand by Dominique Senard, Chief Executive Officer of the Michelin Group, emphasized: “We see it as a great honour to be among the six prizewinners of the Michelin Supplier Award”.

Dr. Peter Schäfer resigns at his own request from his position as a member of the Board of Management of Saarstahl AG
Dr. Peter Schäfer (52) will resign from his position as a member of the Board of Management of Saarstahl AG with effect from September 30, 2013 in order to pursue new challenges outside the company. He has been with the company since January 1, 2007, first as chief representative and from January 1, 2008 as a member of the Board of Management, where he was responsible for the sales division. While in this position Dr. Schäfer was able to overcome the challenges of the economic and financial crisis of 2009, together with his colleagues on the Board of Management, and to achieve the successful reemergence of the company in the following years.

"Stahlsternchen" shine on the sky
Initiated and supported by Saarstahl AG and the Stahlstiftung Saar the new children's day-care center "Stahlsternchen", which is close to the company and belongs to the state office of the Workers Welfare Federal Association (AWO), was officially opened today. The operation in the Siemensstrasse 1 has been running since February 1st this year and it is financed by public funds and parental contributions within the legal regulations. In addition, Saarstahl AG takes over the annual operating costs. The management of the children's day-care center is in the hands of Petra Haben, who is supported by a team of 8 professional educators.

220 million euro modernisation project completed at Zentralkokerei Saar
Optimisation of coke production and the reduction of emissions were the essential targets of the modernisation project started in 2007 at Zentralkokerei Saar GmbH (ZKS), a joint subsidiary of AG der Dillinger Hüttenwerke and Saarstahl AG. Work has now been completed: following the construction of the new Battery 3 and its commissioning in 2010, the totally renovated Battery 1 has now also been successfully restarted.

40 years of the combined wire rod / bar mill at Saarstahl’s Neunkirchen site
On 12 June 1972, the combined wire rod / bar mill went into operation – A party for employees marked the occasion of the anniversary. In December 1969, the presiding supervisory board of the Neunkircher Eisenwerk AG, formerly Gebrüder Stumm, took the decision to approve an investment of 97 million Deutschmarks in building a combined wire rod and bar mill. After a construction period of only two and a half years, at exactly 12.58 p.m. on 12 June 1972, the first so-called billets - a semi-finished steel product - came off the new line. Continuous modernisation has also meant that, up to the present day, “’Line 31’ has stood for great flexibility and product quality “Made in Neunkirchen”.
