Saarstahl’s sustainability efforts again earn gold in 2021
30 March 2021
The strong and long-standing commitment of Saarstahl to corporate social responsibility (CSR) was again rated worthy of a gold medal in 2021 by EcoVadis, an international provider of sustainability ratings. Saarstahl had already been honored with a gold rating in 2020. This year the company scored 72 points, placing the Saarland steel company among the top three percent of companies in its industry category. The CSR rating by EcoVadis confirms that responsible action and sustainable management are central components of Saarstahl's corporate policy.
“The gold medal from EcoVadis is a recognition of Saarstahl’s long-standing commitment to sustainability and an incentive to keep getting better,” said Dr. Karl-Ulrich Köhler, Chairman of the Management Board. "I am proud that we have been able to continue to improve even during the coronavirus crisis and that we have gotten a step closer to our aim of sustainable steel production. The renewed gold rating clearly demonstrates that we in the steel industry are aware of our responsibility to employees, customers and business partners, as well as to the environment, and that sustainable action is firmly embedded in our corporate culture – even in difficult times.”
The EcoVadis audit is performed annually, and Saarstahl had already positioned itself successfully as a sustainable company in previous years. Saarstahl once again increased its overall score in 2021 and, with 72 points, is among the top three percent of companies in its industry category. The rating is valid for the year 2021.
The EcoVadis assessment is based on a defined scorecard. This scorecard also incorporates the criteria of the Global Reporting Initiative, the United Nations Global Compact and the International Organization for Standardization for the topics “Environment”, “Labor”, “Fair Business Practices” and “Sustainability in Procurement”. The definition of specific evaluation criteria enables comparison of the companies certified by EcoVadis worldwide.
